An Incident at Beauduc

A young policeman is one of three killed in a night operation. His bosses say it was a training accident in the Alps. Local Provençale farmers know it was murder on the Camargue beach at Beauduc. The boy’s grandfather asks the retired Peter Smith and his old friend Gentry to find out the truth. Smith accepts as he has strong feelings about friendship, trust and betrayal.

Smith has no interest in solving whatever was the major crime behind these events but he wants to honour his commitment to the young Policeman’s grandfather.  As his investigation progresses he discovers that in all probability the events at Beauduc are part of a much greater conspiracy involving the illicit trade in nuclear material and the involvement of some of France's most high-level secret police forces whose job is to protect the nation rather than betraying it.

He falls back on his old friend and colleague Gentry and on his new allies on the Camargue itself and in the underworld of Marseille crime before the mystery is solved and the crime of the murder of the old man's grandson is avenged again on the night-time beach at Beauduc.
