A Retirement Disturbed

Peter Smith has the tranquillity of his retirement from a long career teaching art history interrupted by an attack while visiting the Roman Amphitheatre in Arles.  He regains consciousness lying under the dead body of a local businessman, Robert DuGresson.  From the moment he gets a late-night visit from Madame Aubanet, the man’s beautiful widow, Smith and his companion in retirement, Arthur the greyhound, find themselves gradually embroiled in a deepening intrigue of Camargue farmers, Provencal conspiracy, Marseilles criminal families, European police and good food.

The local police don't seem to be interested in the death on the man who they say died of natural causes. Smith is asked by Madame Aubanet to find out the truth and almost immediately falls into jeopardy and towards an equally dangerous love affair. He crosses swords with a local gangster from Marseilles while unearthing a web of intrigue involving embezzlement of EC funds before finding that the truth behind the very unnatural causes of DuGresson's death lies close to home that he would have liked.

On top of it all he finds that some of his own past somewhat dubious past that he had hoped to have left long behind coming back both to haunt and to save him.
